The term “off guard” is defined by three key words in the dictionary.
Unprepared, unsuspecting, and vulnerable. As stand-alone
concepts, they can also well define how it feels to be alive: the way
in which we landed in this world, with nothing but just our bodies
to protect our inner selves from others and to present our outer selves to others.
When thinking about how much of this body of ours we’ve truly seen, there’s
only the need to think of how many pictures of us we have. “But we
see ourselves in the mirror every day!” you may say, but being
honest, how much can we trust our own two eyes?
Our own two eyes, which can’t see anything without the veil of our own
consciousness speaking, defining, and judging all that we see before
we can even intentionally think about it. Sometimes it is better to
be seen through the eyes of others.
A camera can be considered a man-made eye, only useful when following the
orders of the two [redacted]-made eyes of whoever stands right
behind it. Facing a lens can often make us feel unprepared,
unsuspecting, and vulnerable in many ways, all these three being
adjectives that can be seen in a negative and in a positive light.
In a negative way when the action of taking pictures results in
something invasive, when it feels something we are not yet
prepared to reveal is being exposed.
In a positive way when it comes as an action that wishes to freeze a joyful
instant for eternity, when it doesn’t feel like an external presence
but rather a participant of the blissful moment we are living, that
happens to have the power to retain a memory better than anyone could.
This is a compilation of unprepared moments, of unsuspecting individuals
being vulnerable in front of a man who wishes nothing but to
capture life just as it is and those who live in it just as they are.
The flash of his camera is always accompanied by a warm smile, a witty
comment, or a fun idea that makes the blinding light unnoticeable.
This little camera has traveled a lot and has seen a lot.
The bigger cameras have too, but this one is the one that stores the
fun, the joy, and the genuineness without the need for color.
There’s no need to worry about the pose or the posture;
Marc will catch you off guard, and off guard, we all look our best.
